How I drove consensus between Canada, USA, and Mexico on an environmental law mechanism
The Submissions on Enforcement Matters (SEM) mechanism under the CUSMA free trade agreement is meant to hold governments accountable for environmental law issues. It sometimes takes years for cases to wind through the system.
I was responsible for leading the Government of Canada's involvement in the SEM mechanism, administered by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, while Canada chaired the process in 2022. My goal was to clear roadblocks and promote collaboration for swifter progress.

By re-focusing discussions on procedural next-steps and the need to conclude consultations among government agencies in all three countries, I was able to improve the pace of SEM cases advanced at the working level by 300% that year.

I was proud to contribute to a more transparent and responsive SEM process, critical for credibility and ensuring timely access to environmental justice.

Helping Canada's Prime Minister and top environment officials at a major UN biodiversity conference
World leaders and environmental organizations descended on Montreal in December 2022 to draft a landmark agreement for nature conservation until 2030. I was asked to support Canada's Prime Minister and Environment Minister's participation.
With Canada as host and a prominent advocate, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity's COP15 adopted the new Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
In advance of the conference, I provided strategic advice to the Prime Minister's team on which meetings and events were of priority. On the ground, I provided logistical support and helped prepare briefing materials for Canada's Environment Minister and other senior officials.
This experience required a sharp eye for detail, and critical and strategic thinking, all while remaining organized and calm in an extremely fast-paced and evolving environment.
